Met up with Angie, Jason, Deana, Gianna, Rich, Isaac, James, and Sarah from the Sacramento Hiking Meetup Group for a trip to Feather Falls, on the north-eastern side of Oroville Lake in the Plumas National Forest.
Feather Falls is a wonderful waterfall and was in full rage at this time of the year. At 640 feet, it is the 6th highest waterfall in the continental United States. To get to the falls you take a loop trail. We chose the left path, which is a tad shorter and steeper, for the trip there. The trail is on the side of a canyon and it was shaded for most of the trip, so the flora and fauna was of the shade loving varieties… moss, ferns, dogwood trees, and scattered wildflowers. Along the trail, we saw the Bald Rock Dome, the middle fork of the Falls River, and numerous creeks and streams trickling across the trail. We also saw upper and lower Frey Creek Falls.. somewhat smaller than Feather Falls, but still quite nice. Across from the falls is a very nice wooden overlook platform, where we ate lunch and watched the falls. Afterwards, we climbed up to the top of the falls for the view from up there. Beautiful weather, nice company and just a great day!
Distance: 8.5 miles. Time: 5 hours. Elevation Change: approximately 1000′.
