The red plants you asked about are commonly called "ice plants", the scientific name is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpobrotus_edulis" rel="nofollow">Carpobrotus edulis</a> and the are very common around the coast here. The morning sun was really enhancing their red color on this day. Oh and whales are <a href="http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/whale-size.gif" rel="nofollow">measured in tons</a>, so they are huge!! It is humpback whales that migrate along the California coast and they average 52 feet long and 30-50 tons in weight. Thanks Carol.
