I took nice leisurely drive north on Highways 49 and 89, with Lake Almanor being my destination for the night. Just outside Sierra City, I took a break at the Kentucky Mine Museum. It’s a cool little museum that’s only open a few months of the year. Unfortunately, I was too late to take the mine tour that they offer. I followed a few side roads that said “history marker” this way and found the site of Peter Lassen’s 1851 trading post in Indian Valley and an old schoolhouse in Taylorsville. I arrived at Lake Almanor and drove around it during the sunset and watched a blood-red sun sink over the horizon. To end the evening, I enjoyed the best ever french fries with my dinner at the Copper Kettle Cafe in Chester.
