Last day of vacation, I’m heading north up highway 95 and then will turn left at highway 50 to home sweet home. Highway 50 in Nevada is nicknamed “the loneliest road”, well highway 95 is pretty lonely too. One of the first things to catch my eye is a sign on an abandoned way station in the middle of nowhere, “Restaurant, Bar, Sluts”; I guess even the sluts weren’t enough to keep this place in business. ;) I drove past Walker Lake, a rugged looking lake in the desert. Passed through Hawthorne, an army town with a large munitions dump on one edge of town and a sculpture of bombs painted red, white and blue on the other end of town. Continuing on, I saw a “shoe tree”; a lone tree by the side of the road with dozens of shoes hanging from it. Finally I came to the turnoff for Churchill State Park, the remnants of a military fort from the 1800′s. I checked out the park and then took the dirt road shortcut over to Highway 50–a 4-wheeling we will go! And there’s Highway 50 and there’s California and there’s Sacramento and there’s home!
